KNOW MY NAME

BY CHANEL MILLER

Chanel Miller, who was known as Emily Doe for the duration of her police file investigation, articulates with precision, intentionality and eloquence her story of surviving sexual violence and its aftermath. She was the unnamed survivor of a renowned assault by Brock Turner, a swimmer for Stanford University. Chanel experienced the American criminal justice system, and relays in a way that is both severe, entirely fair and well-spoken, just how difficult that experience was. This is a book that I’d recommend to anyone, including survivors. I found relief in reading Chanel express what I’d felt for years and not had words for, and in hearing someone boldly proclaim important truths and realities so publicly.

If you do not want to read an entire book, please read Chanel’s victim impact statement, found here:

Content Disclaimer: This book was found emotional, yet validating and empowering by staff who are survivors. It discusses some intense situations and visual language, but this made up a small fraction of the book.
