WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO
BY GABOR MATE
Gabor Mate is a doctor who worked with people who’s lives are influenced by childhood trauma. His expertise extends from those who’s lives are consumed by their pain, through to those who are just beginning to remembering or accept their pain. As a nazi genocide survivor himself, he has been his own first client.
“When the Body Says No - The Cost of Hidden Stress” is about suppressed trauma. In both childhood and adulthood, there are a multitude of reasons to suppress pain in order to survive current situations. For many of us, if we’d halt our lives in order to mourn and do the deep work of healing and pursuing justice, we’d have to quit school or our job, or pause our relational responsibilities. Hidden stress does take a devastating toll on our bodies, though. Mate teaches in this book how hiding pain as a child results in certain habits as adults. As a holocaust survivor, one of his most impactful childhood experiences was seeing how his mother gave herself in order to keep him healthy and happy, and how that kept her motivated to keep surviving. To this day, his body fights to hide his pain from his mother, as his child mind still yearns to protect her from his pain, so she can stay strong. Read this book to learn more about the toll taken our bodies as a result of hidden stress, and what can be done to prevent those outcomes, or tend to those that already exist.
